New Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has confirmed a number of new executive appointments, including the successor for his previous role. Prior to receiving the CEO job, Nadella was the executive vice president of cloud and enterprise. Scott Guthrie, who has been acting in the role for the past two months following Nadella’s appointment as CEO, will now officially take over that position.
Stephen Elop, who was previously a candidate for the CEO position alongside Nadella, has been confirmed to be rejoining Microsoft as executive vice president of Microsoft’s devices group. Elop was previously the CEO of Nokia and his return to Microsoft coincides with the acquisition of Nokia’s devices and services business, which is scheduled to close in April.
Last but not least, Phil Spencer has been promoted to a new role overseeing the combination of the Xbox and Xbox Live development teams with the Microsoft Studios team. Spencer, a Microsoft veteran, will serve as leader for all software, gaming, and content assets and run the Xbox, Xbox Live, Xbox Music, Xbox Video, and Microsoft Studios teams.
“Recently, I’ve discussed with the Microsoft leadership team the need to zero in on what truly makes Microsoft unique,” Nadella said in an email to Microsoft employees. “As I said on my first day, we need to do everything possible to thrive in a mobile-first, cloud-first world. The announcements last week, our news this week, the Nokia acquisition closing soon, and the leaders and teams we are putting in place are all great first steps in making this happen.”
